Black July 1983 – 25 years of Sri Lankan State sponsored GENOCIDE of Tamils

Tamil Youth Organisation UK successfully ceased their 25 hour fast, which commenced on the 25th July at 4pm (GMT), to mark the 25th anniversary of ‘Back July’.

More than 100 Tamil youths came together in Trafalgar Square for the 25 hour fast to commemorate the lives lost from the horrific events of Black July 1983.

Annually, July 23rd marks a tragic date in the calendar for Sri Lankan Tamils. In 1983, with the aid of the Sri Lankan Government and its armed forces, Sinhala mobs in Colombo began a two day pogrom against the Tamil population culminating in the death of over 3000 Tamil people in that space of time. There were numerous murders, rapes, and robberies by mobs who were aided by politicians with lists of all the Tamils living within the different districts of Colombo. This year therefore marked the 25th anniversary of this event and, as you will be aware, of the Sri Lankan civil war that still continues today. The Sri Lankan authorities routinely try and neglect the happenings of those barbaric few days but in the minds of the Tamils, it is not an event that can easily be forgotten.
